“i am not a writer – i am a screenwriter, which is half a filmmaker.”

Films don’t tell audiences their story; they show them. And yet all films, including the smoothest and most gorgeous ones that seem superbly crafted on screen, are drilled down to the last level of detail. In text. Yeah!
However, writing a story for the visual media isn’t the same as writing one for the written media. Screenplays are largely action and dialogue. Very often, the information presented in visual media is not even linear, unlike in a written story. And nonetheless, the end product, a film, may feel slickly fashioned.
Screenwriters have a major role to play in this. They are the first people who translate an idea into a visual story on a piece of paper. They are, in fact, half the filmmakers! As goes the adage, “You can make a bad movie with a good screenplay, but you can’t make a good movie with a bad screenplay.”
Filmmaking is the new skill of the social media age. Feature films, ad films, product releases, Instagram videos, animation films, YouTube tutorials, documentaries… who doesn’t need to make a film? All our communication is increasingly visual. But turning an idea into a visual media product isn’t easy. It requires a completely different skillset, one that we don’t acquire while writing 2-page essays in school. :)
This workshop focuses on understanding ‘how to conceptualize and execute an idea or a story for the visual medium.’ Through the 7-day workshop, participants will learn to think in terms of pictures, sounds, and actions. They will also learn the universal scriptwriting conventions to meet the demands of their audiences – directors, producers, viewers, and the like. And more:
Course Contents:
1) Ideation
2) Storytelling
3) Conversion of story into script
4) Script structure for different genres
