Phoram Desai

A Natural Communicator

Phoram Desai is an educator, teacher trainer, and project developer with over 20 years of experience. Her forte lies in engaging students using creative languages of learning such as stories, movies, illustrations, and anecdotes.

According to Phoram, creativity is all around us, just needs to be tapped by freeing our minds from the baggages of grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and the like. An avid movie buff, Phoram also loves cooking, reading, and travelling.

"creativity is more than just being different. making the simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity."
- charles mingus

Communication is a strong force that has shaped the evolution of mankind and contributed to its superior evolution compared to other species. And this force is rapidly changing. New age communication is increasingly non-linear (think hyperlinks), visual (think social media), and multi-sensorial (think mass communication at IPL).

As the syntax of communication changes, it requires us to break free from the shackles of traditional approaches (think grammar teachers, literary compositions, spelling bees, 5-page long essays in exams… phew!). Now is the time (like it has always been, for every generation) to tap into our inner creativity and redefine our style. Because creative communication is not so much about the mastery of a language, as about a novel idea expressed innovatively. Creativity in communication, is therefore, the use of original thinking to communicate clearly, concisely, and colourfully.

This workshop aims at honing these 3 Cs of communication while building awareness of how creativity exists all around us. The participants will explore some authentic material – print & TV advertisements, social media communication, food packaging, news excerpts, and such to understand the prime features and formats of different kinds of communication.

Towards the end of the workshop, all participants will create an output that can be used in an actual setting by The Hive. This will not only make the experience fun and memorable but also show the value it has in real life. Going forward, they can apply the skills learnt in their school/business presentations, social media announcements, invitation designs, and a lot more!
