the basics of calligraphy

In a world that’s getting increasingly virtual, are you missing that handwritten greeting card from a friend, the sticky notes on your refrigerator, or the travel memoirs you wrote in a journal rather than a blog? Take a reflective pause in your fast moving life, and give yourself a physical opportunity to spark your creative side. Through the art of beautiful writing, Calligraphy, evoke an intimate and personal form of expression that is as unique to you as your fingerprint.

In this 7-day workshop, delve into the historic origins of an art that was revered above painting and sculpting, and proliferated in several cultures. Learn the foundational style, the contemporary style, and reading the strokes for other Calligraphic styles.

Embark on a journey of leisurely discoveries in this programme, as the beauty of calligraphy, regardless of its style, is also in the expression of the thoughts and the feelings of a calligrapher, and in the spontaneous response it elicits from a viewer. Uncover your personal style by exploring different Calligraphic materials and chiseling your own pens.

1. How long does it take to learn calligraphy?

Calligraphy is not hard to learn but it is hard to master! Basic styles of calligraphy can be learnt through a beginner’s workshop, but it takes years of practice to get proficient in the skill.

2. Can I do calligraphy if I have bad handwriting?

Calligraphy is an art, distinctly different from handwriting. It has a specific set of rules that can be followed to create a beautiful script. So no matter what your everyday handwriting looks like, it will have zero bearing on what your calligraphy looks like. However, practice of calligraphy may improve your writing in the long run.

3. What are some of the benefits of calligraphy?

The joy of creation! The biggest gratification from any art is the pleasure of making something. It is meditative and therapeutic. There are other benefits too, such as the reinforcement of pathways that strengthen motor skills and memory. With virtual devices, our body is stationary and gets disconnected from our brain. But through hands-on, creative activities, our brain is engaged at a higher level. The combination of art and the written word engages both sides of the brain, leading to the processing of reason & emotion both. Calligraphy is also an opportunity to create personalized presents for people we love.

4. What resources will I need to bring for this class?

Plenty of enthusiasm and an open mind. The rest, we'll provide at The Hive. You'll get your individual calligraphy kits and make your own pens too.

5. What safety precautions will be taken at The Hive?

Our premises are sanitized regularly. We will be working in small groups and social distancing norms will be strictly followed. Masks are compulsory when indoors or within close proximity. However, the participants are responsible for their own health & safety.
