Tripat Ratra

Early Years Educator

Tripat recently found her calling in the field of early childhood education. With a Masters degree in marketing, and having spent almost a decade in the field of banking and insurance, she believes that, there is nothing more rewarding than enabling children to explore, observe and learn by themselves.

During the pandemic, she had the chance to interact with and conduct reading and comprehension classes for children living in different cities, virtually. Being with these little learners, on their journey to becoming avid readers, is the gratification that she primarily seeks in her role as an educator.

"a reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . ."
- george r.r. martin

Reading is one of the most important skills of the 21st century. A variety of tasks in daily life require reading and understanding written instructions. If children do not learn to read, they cannot read to learn. Even though the gap is huge, it needs to be filled with immediate action. The solution for this is teaching children how to read using systematic synthetic phonics.

What is Phonics?

The English alphabet is made up of letters and each letter has a sound. The ability to decode these sounds is called Phonics. However, the language is more complex than just those 26 sounds (phonemes). There are essentially 44 sounds that one should be able to identify in order to read effectively, since there are many ways in which the 26 letters of the alphabet can be used and arranged.

The NutSpace Phonics Stories Program

NutSpace uses a multisensory approach considering the short attention span of a young learner. Stories are a wonderful way to put across any concept in a fun, engaging way. Hence, this programme has stories at its core, ensuring children are not only learning how to read but also enhancing their vocabulary and language skills. The focus is on comprehension in a big way, for what is the fun of reading when you can’t understand what the written word means?

Games, music, body movement, role play and drama are a huge part of the lesson plans, ensuring active engagement on the part of children. We have seen the most reluctant learners warming up because of our engaging lesson plans.

This programme also offers access to pre-recorded lessons, extended learning, tutorials for parents and worksheets to be done at home via the NutSpace Learning Management System (LMS).

1. What resources will a child need to bring for this programme?

Happy hearts and a keen mind, which all children are innately blessed with. The rest will be provided as part of the programme.

2. Will any support and training be provided to parents?

Yes, parents play a very important role in setting a strong foundation in a child’s reading journey, and hence would be provided constant support and training through the NutSpace Learning Management System (LMS). The LMS is a repository of training videos, worksheets, story videos, games and activities. Each child and parent, signed up for the programme, also receives year-long access to these resources (for 3 months for the duration of the programme, and 9 months post programme) by way of the LMS.

3. What safety precautions will be taken at The Hive?

We will be working in small groups. Our instructors and staff are fully vaccinated. Masks are recommended when in close proximity. However, the participants are responsible for their own health & safety.
