Kareena Shamsi

An introspective designer

Kareena Shamsi’s background in Communication Design (ISDI) and Sociology (MU) are driven by her love for understanding the intersection between human behaviour and design. Art and design are filters through which she views and experiences the world. Her courses will reflect the same passion.

Kareena is keenly interested in travelling, music, photography, and documentaries. Understanding how unfamiliar things work is a hobby as well.

the virtual workshop:

the foundations of art & design

How can lines create a sense of time & motion, and a point symbolize harmony? Why does our mind see what is not present, and how do we detect patterns?

‘The Foundations of Art and Design’ attempts to discover how the human brain works – how it organizes information, and what it finds aesthetically appealing. The workshop throws light on the core concepts of design, which extend beyond the ability to produce beautiful art.

These principles have practical applications in fields beyond design, such as in advertisement & communication, product development, business management, literature, forensics, and photography, to name a few. They are the foundation of ‘design thinking’ – a way to de-construct problems and solve them, irrespective of the field they arise in.

Aimed at teenagers and adults from all walks of life, this interactive course introduces non-designers to design. It is an opportunity to understand how design is a part of our lives, and how it can be used to enhance it. Through several hands-on activities, the workshop aims to bring out the "designer" that is dormant in all of us.

1. What resources will I need for this workshop?

Plenty of enthusiasm and an open mind. Additionally, a few other readily available items. This being a virtual workshop, we do not require any special materials. Keep ready some of the standard art supplies – water/poster colours, brushes, pencils, markers/crayons, A4 papers/sketch book, glue, sticky tape, and the like. Occasionally, we might also ask you to get creative with everyday household material that you may have.

2. Do I need any computer software?

Not really. You can create your designs physically – cut, copy, paste (no penalties there), sketch, colour, bend, break, stick… you got the idea, right? Some of the work may not even be 2D, i.e. on paper alone. Feel free to use whatever resources you have at your disposal.

3. What background/qualifications do I need as a pre-requisite for this programme?

Again, an enthusiastic approach and open-mindedness to try new ideas. We do not expect you to be artists or craftspeople. This programme requires a use of both the left and right brains, so rest assured you’ll always have opportunities to use logic where your aesthetics suffer, and vice versa.
